Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend  Next Entry
i've discovered that May is what you'd call a garden spider. the web she built last night was apparently strong enough to stay up all day and be used again tonight. like myself, she enjoys the nighttime, and probably spends the day sleeping late and lying around in her underwear. i like that even though Terminix is an extermination company, they had this to say about her kind:
These spiders are beneficial animals and are not dangerous, despite their large size. Garden spiders should not be killed, but should be relocated to another part of the yard where they will be out of the way of human traffic.

lying in bed last night alone and unable to fall asleep i began to occupy myself with little games of alliteration:

milky mother moon hums myriad maroon melodies to miss morose magdalena.

i think 'myriad' may be my favorite word. i also really enjoy 'satiate'. maybe i'll incorporate it into the next round of late-night alliteration...'S' is a great consonant, don't you think?

what's your favorite word?

I'm an alliteration fan, as well, and often have to catch myself from slipping into it unbidden while writing.

My favorite word is "procrustean." It means to "ruthlessly and arbitrarily enforce conformity." It comes from the story of Procrustes, a cranky Greek innkeeper who had beds of a single length, and made sure all his customers fit them exactly. If you were too short or the bed, he stretched you on the rack until you fit. If you were too tall, he cut off the excess bits. Talk about obsessive-compulsive.

i'm the same way...it's almost a natural inclination. i think i tried to write too much poetry when i was younger.

"procrustean" is a great word...i looked it up to see how it was pronounced but i think something isn't compatible with this computer and webster's website. i assume it sounds like "pro-CREW-stee-an"? i think the way a word actually sounds is important in it's status as a favorite. i love the derivation, though. what i want to know is, who the hell was so desperate for a bed?

I'm pretty sure it's "pro-CRUST-ean." Although, one of the reasons I like this word is that it is so obscure, I've only heard it used once in about 20 years of actively listening for it.

I've stayed in some pretty horrible hotels in my time. When you're tired enough, and don't have a lot of money in your pockets, all sorts of accommodations can suddenly seem reasonable.

I always liked this entry. It's not really something you'd submit. I just like it. I think it's the fact that you made spiders seem not scary to me. Every night I lay in bed completely freaked out because I think a spider is going to crawl under the covers with me. Anyways, I think I'm going to pause my reading for the night. It's my bed time. i will restart tomorrow night. I hope I've been at least a little helpful. nite!

i became so much more comfortable with bugs when i started working at terminix. i guess it was one of those exposure things. i had to look at so many pictures and hear so many stories that they just don't scare me much anymore. i still hate roaches and moths, though. more than anything.
